Many laptops from just a few years ago had ATA-66 drives with less than 20GB of space. Later came the monsters of 40 GB ATA-100 and so on These old laptops are still very valuable units, depending on their intended use, of course. and many just need a new HDD to start their second lives. For a second, or backup, unit, they are a cheap alternative and it does not make sense to buy a 100+ GB drive for sporadic use. An original size replacement is just what the doctor ordered and this SpinPoint is a good example. While many 'experts' seem to think that swapping out the HDD's every 3 years is a good thing, I seem to think otherwise. WHY? Because the only disk failures I have experienced, in both desktop and laptop, have been within that period. If the drive has served for more than that, I feel that it is not going to fail for a long, long time. Anyway, that is MY personal experience. Back to this Samsung drive. It is a 5400 rpm drive that is ATA-100 (also compatable with ATA-66 and ATA-133). it is not a quick to seek as a 7200 rpm disk, but the bottleneck in performance is not the plater speed, rather the hardware of the rest of the system that these units were made for. It has the capability to transfer 1 GB in about 2.5 seconds! The CPU and DDR 266 can't take advantage of all that, so anything more would be an exercise in mega-overkill. I bought this one for a mini C400 laptop, which, as stated earlier, was about what it came with from the factory. The size and power consumption are just what is needed for such a tiny ultra-portable machine. If you compare it with the $400 micro 8.9" units with a solid state 8 GB HDD, this makes even more sense. you can go bigger, but better just isn't worth the price.Read full review
It's old technology but it's in an old device that needs it. Works great.
