It's what you didn't know you needed.
The coating works to prevent scratching other metal products in the same pocket. The lid of the flask has metal on the lid and the flask as opposed to the metal/plastic interface on some other flasks. This should be better protection against cross threading which is a problem with the metal/plastic types. I an so conditioned to unscrew the lid till I feel the click of the threads snapping into place before screwing it down that this probably won't make any real difference.
