    Authentic but needed work.

When I received this product I noticed that the head was very loose. In order to tighten this up I needed to replace the set screw with a longer one and use some wooden wedges to snug up the head on the handle. I also sanded, stained and sealed the handle (without the head). Now it looks great and is solid as a rock. The edge on the head needs some sharpening, specifically to remove a prominent burr. Other than that I feel ready to go chop some wood or go to war!

A work in progress from the beginning,

So this gives you the basics of what you need to make a Viking fighting axe but its far from perfect. First, the axe comes with the head loose, secured only by a metric head set screw. The proper way to make a good axe is to fit the handle slightly loose to the head then cut a slit lengthwise for a wooden wedge to be driven in. (proper axes have no set screws) Once the wooden wedge has been driven in, steel wedges can be driven in across the width. NONE of this has been done. At least it has a nice hickory handle. The head is rough cast, and has a completely blunt edge. Nothing a draw file and a lansky puck cant fix. All in all. this is a project from the get go. If your willing to put in the elbow grease then its fine, but if you are not, get something else.

  • Quality control is an issue

I was disappointed when I received my order which surprised me as I have bought Cold Steel products before. The head was very loose. The handle was knurled at the top of the ax head where it was supposed to be friction fit to the handle. Meanwhile, there were large gaps at the base of the ax head so even after tightening the set screw in the back of the ax head the head was only being held in place by the screw. The handle was much lighter in color than the picture of the product and seemed a bit narrow to the grip. Then there was the Taiwan laser etching conspicuously placed on the side of the head. I considered returning it but for the price I decided to see if I could rescue it. I removed the finish from the handle. Next I soaked the head end of the handle in boiled linseed oil for a ...

  • Good materials, poor workmanship & assembly. Made in Taiwan

The good: ... Size and shape correct, as are the materials. The handle is hardwood. The bad: ... The blade is stamped Taiwan, which I will grind off. The blade is poorly fitted and rocks on the shaft because it is held on by an allen screw going through the back of the blade mount and into the shaft. The good: ... I will remove the allen screw and have the hole filled with weld. I will then reshape the handle so it will match the head hole. Hopefully, I can wedge fit the blade to a slightly larger shaft head. I will grind off the Taiwan stamping and thin the blade, because the bearded fighting blades were usually thinner and lighter weight than those used for woodwork, etc. Summary: ... Probably worth the price as a wall hanger or for parts to use in making a more authentic replica.

  • Will need work to function.

Eye of the axe head comes with a large gap to the haft. It is significant enough that I would recommend inserting a sleeve. There is a hex nut in the back for tightening that is often driven into the wood of the haft and must be reset. Adding a wedge would also be a good idea. The edge is actually fairly decent right out of the box for woodsman activities. But you will need to sharpen it further if you intend to use it as a fighting axe. The haft is sturdy and laquered against light exposure to moisture. The length is a bit awkward for shorter folks. The haft is too short to be used as a huscarl's two handed axe but too long to use in a one handed role with a shield. Cutting the haft down would be a simple affair. Overall the two components are good for the price. The real downfall is in ...
