Joseph Standley (1854-1940) Circa 1880. The torture of a witch:a shaman's carving with alder bark still attached. Circa1909 Ye Olde Curiosity Shop label. Disturbing & never-before-seen artifactfrom Standley's original collection. This carving, or one very similar, appears in a photo on page 19 of Standley's pre-1915 "Price List of 1001 Curious Things"(pic 3 above).~ In 1909 The Smithsonian and several other North American museumstraveled to Seattle by sailing ship & train. They purchased much of Standley's collection. Even today, thoseearly 1909acquisitionsremainthe foundation & most highly prized Pacific Northwestartifacts for each of those institutions.Measures about 12" tall.Shipping will be $10.95 to any U.S. address.
