BACKGROUND: In response to the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, Consumer Action Now issued several papers on helping women to become better consumers of energy and remove the sexual inequalities that females had to suffer.They released several policy papers that highlighted the inherent gender discrimination in the energy marketplace. According to the group studies, the oil and gas industry lacked any meaningful participation in the energy industry. At the time, among the BigSix oil companies in America, not a single one had a female board member, director or executive in their ranks. In order to combat this glaring bias, the group issued a number of position papers on how women could overcome thesexism they faced and create a more equal and fair energy marketplace. They also lobbied the government and companies, through shareholder initiatives,to allow more women into the energy decision making process.
