All proceeds to fund ongoing archival preservationAs some of you longtime followers know, in 2020 I inherited the Jordan/Ference Collection of Great War Stereography; my previous passion project of documenting abandoned insane asylums has fallen by the wayside. However, I need to fund the archive that I currently curate; in doing so I am selling off most of the asylum ephemera that was left to me by my late AMA (Aunt Mary Anne, who worked at Mayview State Hospital) and which I purchased on sale sites like this. All items are documented to the best of my ability; all are sold as-is so please ask questions first! The shipping prices are firm but combinable; this is due to the time of packaging and walking over a mile to the post office. Lang, superintendent of Westborough State Hospital for many years, this pair of articles from 1941 regarding the use of indigenous poisons in combinatorial treatment with shock therapies highlights the use of mental patients as guinea pigs in the "snake pit" years of the asylums. Curare, typically used to paralyze the prey in a hunt, was being explored to tone down convulsive patients receiving Metrazol shock therapy or insulin coma therapy. These articles belonged to a long time superintendent of a hospital in Massachusetts notorious for experimenting on patients.
One of the articles discusses experimentation with this "therapy" on children.Walter Freeman, inventor of the the transorbital lobotomy at St. Elizabeths Hospital, gets a mention, as do other notable figures in American psychiatry.Included are both articles in pretty great shape all things considered; next to no foxing occurred due to high quality paper stock. One article has 4 plates, one of which is reproduced here.
