This is an unusually nice Diamond Rubber Company tire advertising ashtray with a cobalt blue glass insert. The ashtray measures about 6.125\" in diameter and the rubber material is in excellent physical condition as shown in the photographs. The glass insert is clean, clear, and free of any chips, cracks, or dings. As a matter of fact, nearly all the thin layer of black rubber overlaying the tire lettering is still in place as you can see. Some of the white rubber can be seen on the underside of the ashtray which was exposed because of use. I know a little about the white lettering and decoration being overlayed with a very thin layer of black rubber. I spent a summer many decades ago working at a Goodyear Tire plant in Akron, Ohio. Like with the old Goodyear Double Eagle tires, they were all handbuilt by master tire builders with the lettering covered with a black rubber overlay so that when the tires were vulcanized, the white lettering wouldn\'t be scorched or burned. The tires came out of the vulcanizers, steaming hot, and on to conveyor belts where crews of young guys like me stood with compressed air powered sanders and buffed the black rubber off of each and every letter to expose the white lettering underneath. On a summer day your face and nostrils would get coated with rubber particles and that probably wasn\'t very healthy. The sound produced by 20 sanders running at once wasn\'t very pleasant until payday came! I don\'t think the industry operates that way anymore. Anyway, add this great ashtray with that little bit of trivia to your collection!
