Dating from the turn of the century these are traditional glass button making pliers.
The pliers are set with a metal mold \"positive\" of the button being pressed and a metal shank mold. Molton glass cane is placed between the molds and the button pressed to shape. While still hot, the excess glass is cut away with scissors before the button is cooled and either hand or machine finished, fired or hand decorated.
The \"positives\" and shank molds are interchangeable but most glass button makers had a seperate pair of pliers for each button design. Each \"positive\" mold used in button pressing is molded from a steel \"negative\". The negative would be hand engraved in incredibly fine detail and as such would be extremely valuable and kept under lock and key, only to be brought out to make a new positive mold.
This pair is signed U &P 25w/w and is fitted with a mold for making a 20mm off square geometric design self shank button.
