This piece came from one of our fathers, who was a country doctor. We discovered it when looking through inherited items, found the graphics and color attractive, and appreciated its snapshot of medical history.

Troches are any type of medicated lozenge. This tin contained antibiotic troches, penicillin and bacitracin, which were both commonly prescribed for a sore throat by Mid-century physicians. Overuse of penicillin and other antibiotics such as these over time ultimately contributed to the bacterial resistance prevalent today, and, in part due to this, penicillin troches are now only infrequently prescribed.

This tin has been opened and is empty. The unwind key is still in place, and what are probably spots of medication stain are noted on a small portion of the tin, mostly on the inside. The expiration date, 9-30-54, is stamped on the bottom. Despite a shallow dent on the side, the color and graphics are nice, and there are no rust spots or major scratches. Measurements include a weight of 2.4 oz, a height of 3 1/4" and a diameter of 2 5/8". The key, which could be removed, measures 1 1/2" in length.

This hard-to-find tin would look handsome in a vintage advertising or pharmaceutical collection or as a Mid-Century decorating piece.
