UV and Black Lights

A problem with most UV sources is they tend to put out some white or colored light. This light reflects from whatever you are shining them on. This light can wash out much of the fluorescence you are hunting for. You may go looking for pet stains and the unwanted light will likely hide any that glow.

A 365nm light source with a filter that blocks all the visible light and only lets the UV through makes a true black light. You can stare at it and you’ll see at most a faint purple glow. When you shine it on an object, any light of any color you see will be from the object fluorescing. Nothing is just reflecting back from your light.

There are a few good 365nm UV lights on that do have filters, and it’s amazing to use a good one, see what glows in the otherwise complete darkness.

The Olight i5UV EOS is a 365nm UV light, and a nice one. But it isn’t filtered; just look and you can see all the unwanted white light also being emitted by the LED.

So we made a filter just to fit the i5UV EOS Olight light (or any other 18mm 365nm UV Light). It’s made with the best ZWB2 bandpass filter glass You just slide it over the end and 99% of the visible light will be blocked, there won’t appear to be any light coming out the end – yes, a real “black” light.

The filter has a very snug fit that won't come off in a pocket or toolbag.

With the filter you will open up a whole new world of things you can now see. Check out the photos of a wall illuminated by the bare i5UV EOS and with our filter.

It slips on and off easily, but you won’t have any need to take it off unless you want to demonstrate how an unfiltered black light looks so bad.

This filter is for the i5UV EOS or any other 365nm UV source. Don’t be putting it on a white LED and complaining it doesn’t work. If there is no UV, there will be no UV.

Note: Will not work with an Olight i3UV or any other 395nm light or any light that doesn’t emit 365nm i5UV LIGHT NOT INCLUDED Note on 395nm UV Lights

395nm LEDs are a deep violet and are not ultraviolet or “black” light. You can see it – it’s not UV by definition. Yes, they make dayglow light up – but so does a blue light. The 395nm LEDs offer much more light output than 365nm LEDs due to efficiency so they are best for just making dayglow glow. But it ain’t black light, it isn’t UV. Anything you shine it on will reflect the violet light along with any glow.

365nm LEDs and other 365nm light sources are actual sources of black light, UV-A light. 365nm light is invisible to your eyes, but you may see a slight glow as your eyeballs fluoresce. 365nm UV will not be seen until/unless it makes something fluoresce in the visible spectrum.
