This sale is for one unique fossil tooth formerly belongingto an extinct genus Otodus species obliquus shark. Teeth and vertebrae arethe only parts of the shark known to have survived the fossilization process. This tooth is approximately 3.5 cm or 1.38 inches from tooth tip to end of rootand weighs 6.4 grams. Both cusps (small side teeth) are visible and quite sharp. Please be careful. The tooth is very sharp at the tip andedges. This particular tooth has no restoration. Please have a look at all the pictures to see the degree ofpreservation of this particular tooth. A U.S. nickel is shown for sizecomparison.

This represents a collectible fossil specimen from 40 to 60million years ago. These sharks belong to thesame Family that includes the Great White and they were likely a distantancestor to the largest known shark, the Megalodon. Otodus is the genus fromwhich the species megalodon belongs. It is estimated by somescientists that every 1 inch length of shark tooth represents around 10 feet bodylength of the shark.

Otodusis anextinct genus of mackerel shark which lived from the Paleocene to the Plioceneepoch. The name Otodus comes from Ancient Greek ōt, meaning “ear” and odoús,meaning “tooth” – thus, “ear-shaped tooth”. The teeth of this shark arelarge with triangular crown, smooth cutting edges, and visible cusps on theroots. Scientists suggest that oldest sharks at least reached 30 ft in totallength with a maximum length of 40 ft. Otodus sharks are bigger than any othercarnivorous fish in the sea today, being one and a half times larger than thelargest recorded great white shark!

Otodus ruled the seasduring the Paleocene and the Eocene (45 - 60 million years ago). It is a quitedominant species in the phosphate quarries of Khouribga Basin in Morocco.
