SATCAT Stardust was a 390-kilogram robotic space probe launched byNASAon 7 February 1999. Its primary mission was to collect dust samples from thecoma of comet Wild 2, as well as samples of cosmic dust, and return these to Earth for analysis.The samples were delivered to the curatorial facility at theJohnson Space Center in Houston, TX, for analysis by the science team.
Stardust wasthe first spacecraft to bring samples from a comet to Earth.
In January 2006, the Stardust spacecraft returned the first in situ collection of samples from a comet, and the first samples of contemporary interstellar dust. Stardust is the first US sample return mission from a planetary body since Apollo, and the first ever from beyond the moon. These samples consist of particles and particle residues in aerogel collectors.
