An early Sperm Sewing Machine Oil bottle from the 1880 era that once contained real sperm whale oil, which was used in lubricating machines, as well as gun oil, for bicycles, etc.... SPERM SEWING MACHINE OIL (bold emb on sunken front panel) ........Hand blown in mold....hand tooled square ring lip....clear...4 1/2"tall....square.....Excellent condition with only one small chip on side of lip; no other damage. A dug bottle with only a bit of light inside haze. We dug this bottle from an 1880s outhouse privy pit..... Sperm Whales were hunted almost to extinction in the 1800s. Their oil made excellent lubricating oil for guns, machines and lamp fluid...
