This is an exceptional sword for any collector or enthusiast.
While this sword has a typical Model 89 heavy nickel plate hilt, it features two hinged, folding basket guards and an more slender, elegant blade. When retracted, the folding guards reduce the profile of the sword when worn under a full-dress military uniform. The main, folding 'clamshell' guard depicts the Prussian eagle with crown on his head retaining a sword in one talon and an orb in another. The folding 'thumb' guard is simply decorated with open-pierced geometrics.
The bakelite grip is in perfect condition and the pommel is a simple, nikel-plated, half-orb, threaded tang nut.
Unlike the standard military issue M1889 model, this unsharpened dress sword blade measures only 20cm wide, 32 inches from hilt to tip, 36 inches overall. Below the hilt on the tang is the foundry mark of Carl Eickhorn: Two standing squirrels facing opposed with the letters "C E" below. At the beginning of the formed blade, both sides and the spine have beed guilded in gold and engraved. The guilded obverse is engraved with a floral pattern and a shield depicting the Prussian eagle. The reverse is also floral with an engraved ribbon banner that reads "EISENHAUER". The spine is engraved "MOHR & SPEYER KGL HOFLIEFERANTEN BERLIN".
The blade itself is in absolutely perfect condition save for the minor scrapes near the hilt from the normal abrasion of the scabbard.
The scabbard is an outstanding example being straight on both sides and retains the original blacked and laquered paint and integrated tip drag protector. While the thin, finish coat of clear laquer is chipped over the full length of the scabbard from years of minor impacts, there is no rust, major scrapes or exposed metal. The single carrying ring is the fixed type.
