This gilt brass cap device features the full Seal of the City of New York, including a sailor, a Native American, an American eagle atop a hemisphere, and a shield bearing four traditional symbols of early commerce: the beaver, windmill, flour barrels, and plow.

Produced by the prestigious Johnson National Company of New York, this badge is an early 20th-century example of the finely die-struck insignia worn by NYPD officers of lieutenant rank and above. The device’s single central screwback fastener and sharply defined detail confirm its authenticity as a pre-WWII issue, likely worn between 1910 and 1925.
