THIS IS A RUSSIAN ZSH-5 MIG PILOT HELMET. That\'s no big deal in itself. There are plenty ZSH-5\'s around. But, the ZSH-5 is unique and the only one of it\'s kind, period. The East Germans were recipients of several Mig fighter wings during the cold war. As part of the reunification of east and west Germany one squadron of Mig Jets was seeded to the New Germany. This made this squadron part of the western arsenal. Perhaps it was the only Mig squadron to fly for the western allies. Reunification meant consolidation of the two air forces. Into the picture came Maj. Richard Bates, USAF RET. now a private contractor, employed by the reunited Germany, to bring the fighter forces together.German relied on Rick and his band of fighter experts for a number of years. When Rick finished training the Mig pilots in western techniques he made many friends as airmen tend to do. Rick was given a special gift of this ZSH-5. Each pilot in the German Mig Squadron signed the helmet and inscribed it with a message of appreciation for the Americans acting as target practice.
