This amphibian footprint recorded on shallow water as is evidenced by impeded raindrops. I would guess that the high articulation on this footprint points to a rather thin and very agile amphibian of sizable length and high dexterity both on land and in water. Possibly an apex amphibian hunter. The El Pueblo ichnotelmafacies (swamp facies) recorded a diverse and early assemblage of tetrapod footprints from a post-quintessential (and one of the last) forested swamps of the late Carboniferous. The time marker is Kasimovian or that time when forested swamps changed to an environment of ferns and conifers. Some classic (persevering) Pennsylvanian traces are present including footprints of giant dragonflies and very large myriapod traces, as well as early mud-shedding four-digit configurations on the footprints of large amphibians. The Kasimovian stage represents a transition to a swampy but nonetheless terrestrial environment. This large amphibian footprint is completely cut-trimmed for a quality exhibit. The footprints of a smaller type of amphibian and raindrops are included. Please note that we have changed from early Permian to Kasimovian late- Pennsylvanian. You can read Kasimovian-age abstract by Henry Ortiz on academiaedu.com.Please note that all of our fossils are from the continental United States, from NE New Mexico, US, that was once part of Pangea. For background information of our fossils and fossil quarry please visit the following blogs:Exceptional late Pennsylvanian footprints, and, Dimetrodon's ichnology and other late-Pennsylvanian footprints.(Copy, open new tab and paste, click on addressif applicable.) The regional time designation on which geologists based their age estimate was completely incorrect. Turns out the El Pueblo ichnotelmafacies formed earlier than surrounding early Permian sites that have been unable to equal the El Pueblo footprint assemblage either in count or diversity.
