Description: this wonderful portfolio \'Army Memories\', \'Edition de Luxe No. 37\' of Civil War illustrations was sold by subscription only. The lithographs are after watercolors by Louis K. Harlow. Nine lithographic plates are included (seven in color, two monotone) mounted on illustrated card stock guards. All nine of the mounts with paper lining sheets with caption printed in blue with the plate number, title, and sub-title or related text. All nine plates signed by Harlow in pencil on the mount. Plate I: \'Taps have sounded - the last drum is ungirded - and the tented field is about to enjoy is well-earned repose.\'
Plate II: Farewell: \'The Soldier\'s Departure\' - this label and print does not appear to match; \'Monotone - In camp before Richmond.\' Possibly Plate VI, IX or X.
Plate III: \'General Grant at Vicksburg with Generals Sherman, Logan and McPhearson.\'
Plate IV: \'Topographical Engineer.\'
Plate V: \'Defense of the Colors.\' (Monotone)

Plate XII: \'Welcome Home: The Soldier\'s Return.\'The deluxe issue of one of the great American chromolithographically illustrated works and a wonderful graphic representation of the Civil War.Measurements: slipcase 19.5 x 2 x 17 inches, prints 7.25 x 11.25 inches. Weight: 10.5 lb.Condition: overall good antique condition. Velvet and vellum slipcase quite worn along right side (silk quite frayed), ties now gone, with central embossed and gilt emblem on front board. Boards lightly scuffed, a few spots of edge wear. Plate no. III has some circular marks, visible in raking light (image 6). Please supersize the images to better see condition.Other:Harlow, who was born in Maine, lived in Boston and was both an etcher and painter. His subjects (unlike the present series) were usually landscapes, and he provided the color lithographer Louis Prang with a stream of watercolour views of New England that were used in his illustrated works.
