This large, 30\" inheight x 25\" in width, slat framed, mid-20th century, post-WWII, Modernist, Abstract Expressionist, geo-abstract oil on board, was painted by the musician turned painter Harry Crowley (American, 1898-1979.) Crowley first pursued music at the Boston Conservatory of Music and taught advanced piano at both the Brooklyn, New York and Westchester, New York Conservatories of Music and was a faculty member for 25 years. He also taught piano privately and the well-known American actress Gloria Swanson, was one of his young pupils. Crowley didn\'t begin to paint until 1941, when he was 43 years old. He was entirely self-taught and quickly became involved in the Abstract Expressionist School of painting happening in New York City, where he created semi-referential, painterly, Abstract Expressionist paintings before abandoning, like many other artists of that period, any reference at all to things in nature, becoming entirely self-referential. This large, signed, oil on board of what\'s an urban landscape, no doubt New York City, shows a monochromatic blue sky over a prismatic color street grid. A truly wonderful Modernist artifact and an exceptional American Abstract Expressionist oil painting. It won\'t disappoint. Top shelf.
