Our vase is a reproduction ofan attic red figure Krater, 490 - 480 B.C. attributed to the the EucharidesPainter, which is now in a private collection (Shelby White and Leon LevyCollection, New York).

Side A: Ganymedes, cupbearerof the gods, serves Zeus on Olympus. The god holds a scepter in one hand and adrinking-cup in the other. A large eagle perches on the tip of his staff. Theyouth hold an oinochoe jug.

Side B: Heracles and Iolausarming for battle.

Ganymede was a Trojan princein Greek mythology, known for his beauty. According to a myth, Zeus turned intoan eagle and abducted Ganymede, bringing him to Mount Olympus. To compensatehis father, Zeus offered him the best horses possible, and told him that hisson would now be immortal and serve as a cupbearer for the gods, as well as alover for him. Ganymedes was often portrayed as the god of homosexual love andas such appears as a playmate of the love-gods Eros (Love) and Hymenaios(Hymenaeus) (Marital Love).
