They respectively measure7.0 cm and6.6 cm.

Also 2 pairs of the Freshwater Thumbnail Clams:

Sphaerium sulcatum measuring 1.4 cm

They are from an old collection and were collected in the1940s when they were more common.Now, almost all native clam populations have declined. In the 1960s and early1970s, industrial and agricultural runoff polluted the Great Lakes\'water with excessive amounts ofphosphate, accelerating algae growth and killing fish and clams. Most recently, Great Lakes\' waterhas been plagued with the invasive zebramussels. They also have beenchoking the waterways and the native clams. Freshwater clams represent the mostendangered group of animals in the United States.
