Fossil Dennstaedtiopsis Fern in algae - Eocene Green River Fm Carbon Co. Utah:
Fern fronds (Dennstaedtiopsis sp.)
Green River Formation; Eocene
Carbon County, Utah
This is a specimen containing several frond traces ofDennstaedtiopis sp. fern enveloped in algae from the Green River Formation of Carbon County, Utah. Although this material comes from Carbon County, Utah, we note that thealgae surrounding the fern looks identical in mineralization to the Green River Formation algae from Wamsutter, Wyoming. The algae is also the same Chlorellopsis coloniata species as is found at Wamsutter. While Wamsutter is in Sweetwater County, Wyoming it is only a few miles west of the county line for Carbon County, Wyoming where the Green River Formation continues to outcrop on the western edge of Carbon County. It is possible that this interesting fern is found in both locations. This fern genus has also been found in the Eocene (Clarno) of Oregon and Eocene (Allenby Fm.) of British Columbia. There are over 50 modern species in the genus worldwide. This end cut measures 3.75" x 2.75" on the polished face and it varies up to 1 inch thick.
