Laika the Space Dog, became the first living Earth-born creature (otherthan microbes) to orbit Earth aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. She was astray mongrel dog from the streets of Moscow.

The American media dubbed her \"Muttnik\", making aplay-on-words for the canine follow-on to the first orbital mission, Sputnik. Sadly,she died between five and seven hours into the flight from stress andoverheating.
