Fannie Hurst(1885 – 1968)was an AmericanNovelistand short-story writer whose works were highly popular during the post-World War Iera.Her work combined sentimental, romantic themes with social issues of the day, such as women's rights and race relations. She was one of the most widelyread female authors of the 20th century, and for a time in the 1920s she was one of the highest-paid American writers. Hurst also actively supporteda number of social causes, including feminism,African American Equality, andNew Dealprograms.
Approximately 30 films were made from Hurst's fiction. Back Streetwas the basis for three films of the same name in1932,1941and1961, plus a fourth filmwritten byFrank Capra,FORofferDEN(1932), which liberally borrowed elements from Hurst's novel without crediting her. Imitation of Lifewas twice adaptedfor film in1934and1959.Both were respectively inductees for the 2005 and 2015 National Film registry lists.
In 2004, The Feminist Presspublished a collection of her stories from between the years 1912 and 1935, seeking to "propel a long overdue revivaland reassessmentof Hurst's work" and praising her "depth, intelligence, and artistry as a writer."
