Etched Scrimshaw Bone Trinket Box, made in India, Nautical Theme, Sperm Whale Design.This is a hefty and sturdy box, weighing over 10 ounces. It measures 6.25” x 3.25” x 1.5”. The rear hinges and front clasp all are in fine working order. The box is lined with clean green felt type material. It’s ready to display or give as a gift. This is a pre-owned item. I don’t think it is very old. Less than 20 years old by my estimation.
Modeled after the scrimshaw art of sailors of the 1800s, when New England was the center of the whaling industry. One of the ways they passed the time during the long months spent at sea was creating scrimshaw—etched bones or tusks that were blackened with soot or tobacco to highlight the design.
