Historical note: The battles of Lexington and Concord were foughtin the Province of Massachusetts Bayon April 15, 1775, and constituted the outbreak of war between Great Britain and its thirteen North American colonies. A great deal of tension had been building as a result of laws and dictates asserted by the British parliament in London being ever more strenuously rejected by the growing Patriot movement.

This conflict had already led to violence, but it was the acts of Parliament that required fundamental alterations to the Massachusetts colonial government that led to a parallel, revolutionary government being established in the colony by local Patriot leaders, who had also been coordinating with similar partisans in the other twelve colonies.

This new government began to organize an independent militia, and the British soon declared the colony to be in rebellion. In order to prevent effective resistance, British Army regulars were sent out of Boston to destroy arms and other military supplies that were likely to come under the colonists\' control. The Patriot leaders\' intelligence network had earlier alerted them to the threat, however, and they had moved the weapons caches and anticipated the first true battle of the war.

Paul Revere famously rode to alert them to the route the British would take out of Boston based on a code in lanterns displayed by the Old North Church: \"one if by land, two if by sea.\" The first shots were fired at Lexington, where the militia was forced back by the regulars, but later that day at Concord, the regulars found themselves outnumbered 400 to 100.

After some fighting led to casualties on both sides, the British retreated in the face of their greater opposition. These were the first true battles of the American Revolutionary War.
