ESA Hera Mission Launches

The Hera mission, developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) for its space safety program, was launched on October 7, 2024, by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This mission aims to study the Didymos binary asteroid system, which was previously impacted by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft in September 2022. Hera’s primary objective is to evaluate the kinetic impactor method for deflecting near-Earth objects that could pose a threat to Earth. The spacecraft will measure the size and morphology of the crater created by DART, as well as the momentum transferred by the impact, to assess the efficiency of the deflection technique.

Hera’s mission phases include early characterization, payload deployment, detailed characterization, close observation, and experimental phases. Each phase has specific objectives, such as determining the global shape and mass/gravity of the asteroids, releasing CubeSats, and conducting high-resolution investigations of the surface area of Dimorphos, the smaller asteroid in the Didymos system.

The spacecraft, manufactured by OHB SE, has a launch mass of 1,128 kg and dimensions of 1.6 × 1.6 × 1.7 m. It will be controlled from ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, using ESA’s trio of 35 m-diameter Deep Space Antennas located in Cebreros, Spain, and Malargüe.
