The Offering
This is a newly split piece of shale from the Llewellyn Formation containing fern fossils. The shale piece is approximately 9 X 5 inches inches in size.
Why White Fern Impressions?
This fern comes from private land near St. Claire, PA The deposit is unusual because the plant matter is believed to have been first replaced by pyrite and then, over time, a brilliant white mineral called pyrophyllite (pie raw of lite). Unlike many other fern fossils from the area the contrast between the pyrophyllite and black shale creates a stunning specimen. The fern Alethopteris sp., which is one of the more common fern genus in the Llewellyn Formation. The formation has been dated to roughly 300 to 308 million years ago.
Uses:
This is great example of a plant that has been preserved via mineral replacement. Fossilization, casts, molds, sedimentation, paleoenvironments, swamps, plants and plant morphology all become topics of exploration.
I will include a detailed description that provides you with additional information and photographs about these beautiful rocks.
