Each offer is for one thin section ofArchean (2.5 billion years) stromatolite from the Greenstone belt of South Africa. We had not thin sectioned these material before and did not know what to expect. However, it turned out to be quite a surprise as we found numerousspherical structures within the bedding layers that are very reminiscent of coccoidal bacteria. These coccoids are tiny, but in some slides small masses of them occur along with other black, seemingly organic remains. These fossils are so small we weren\'t able to photograph any details but at 75x magnification we were able to make out the spherical forms.

This is the first material we have had with a hint of true organic bacterial fossils from so far back in time.

You can see from the enlarged image that we have highlighted the structures of note. The bubble in the image measures only 0.3mm wide. The black coccoids and other material is about 1/100 the size of the bubble, so we are dealing with truly tiny fossils in the micrometer range.

These would make a great research project.
