This stunning set of eight Haviland Limoges Oyster Plates were bought by my grandmother at an antique store in Philadelphia. They were used for display in her china cabinet for many years as she was so proud of these elegant plates.
Each plate is handpainted and is unique.Representations of life under the sea with fishes, corals, skates and kelp adorn them. They would look fabulous with your coastal home decor! How special it would be to decorate your library shelves or business conference room walls with this spectacular set.
These highly prized and rare French plates are called \"turkey oyster plates\" because they have five wells for oysters in lieu of today\'s half-dozen. They were quite fashionable among the American elite in the 1890s and beyond.The diameter of each is approximately 8.5 inches.The bottom marks on the set show that the plates were crafted between 1876 nd 1889. One is \"H&Co.\" (Haviland & Company) and the other in green is Haviland & Co. Limoges in a circle. On the bottoms you will also note that there are unglazed portions - original from the manufacturing process. There are no cracks, repairs or crazing on any plate.
