Antique Scottish Cow Horn Ale or Cider Cup Striking Pattern and Warm Patina #11:
Description:An antique Scottish cow horn cup for ale or cider, dating to the 1850s, the Victorian Era. Rustic, lightly polished, multi-colored opaque horn. It is 4 1/4" tall with 3" top diameter. The set-in bottom is silver colored metal - no doubt a replacement. It would have been lathe-turned horn when first made. See photos #5 and #6. The age patina is beautiful. Please enlarge my photos.
Condition: Afine piece for display or use. I find no significant damage. I let water stand in it over night and at the moment it does not leak.Any antique horn cup may develop leaks over time. Natural horn may dry out, shrink, and warp with disuse, so you may want to put whisky or ale in it every night to keep it tight. If you plan to drink from it, you will need to clean it thoroughly - but do not put it into the dishwasher
I am listing many more antique horn cups, large and small, this week, as well as several small and large spoons, a salad set, napkin rings, and necklace. Why not click on the horn department on the left side of this page and have a look.
