ANTIQUE POSTCARD

(Albumen Print Cabinet Card)

I acquired fifteen (15) antique postcards at an estate sell. Most of them are signed by Erich Gerstenberg of the famous Chicago Board of Trade and hand-dated 1882, from his world tour of that date, but some are not dated or signed, such as this one. I believe all to be circa 1882, and probably all from that tour since they are similarly hand-numbered in ink and were all together, but I cannot guarantee those that are not signed as having belonged to Gerstenberg.

I have done just a little research into old / antique postcards, and some of the ones I am listing are listed elsewhere at much higher prices.

I have tried to take several pictures, both with and without flash to give as much accurate detail as possible.

All cards are in very good antique condition, but a few have slight creases and/or damage to corner(s) as shown in pictures.

All measure 6 ½ by 4 ¼ inches.

All pictures are of the actual card you are offerding on.

Picture of the July Column, which is a monumental columnin Paris commemorating the Revolution of 1830, and the following text at the bottom:

Nothing but a very small “6” written in ink in one corner.

As mentioned above, several cards found with this one were signed by Erich Gerstenberg and hand-dated 1882. While this one is not, it is likely from the same time period and probably collected during the same tour.

Gerstenberg & Company was a Chicago Board of Trade member firm founded in 1856 by Charles Gerstenberg. Charles’ son Erich joined the CBOT in 1879 and son Adolph joined in 1882 and Gerstenberg & Company had four generations of Gerstenbergs that worked for the company before it was sold to fellow CBOT firm O\'Connor & Company, Inc. in 1986.

General Print Information on this era antique card:

Thealbumen print, also calledalbumen silver print, was invented in1850byLouis Désiré Blanquart-Evrard, and was the first commercially exploitable method of producing aphotographic printon a paper base from anegative. It used thealbumenfound inegg whitesto bind the photographic chemicals to the paper and became the dominant form of photographic positives from 1855 to the turn of the century, with a peak in the 1860-90 period.

TheCarte de visiteprocess was quickly replaced by the largerCabinet cards. In the early 1860s, both types of photographs were essentially the same in process and design. Both were most oftenalbumen prints; the primary difference being the cabinet card was larger and usually included extensive logos and information on the reverse side of the card to advertise the photographer’s services. However, later into its popularity, other types of papers began to replace the albumen process. Despite the similarity, the cabinet card format was initially used for landscape views before it was adopted for portraiture.
