Antique African Tribal Mortar/Goblet | Kuba Relief Carving | 90–120 Years Old:
$45.00
Measurments: 5 Inches tall / 3 Inches wide
Up for sale is a rare and antique African tribal medicine cup / goblet, hand-carved and estimated to be 90–120 years old, originating from a private estate collection.
Origin: Believed to be from the Kuba people of Central Africa
Estimated Age: Late 19th to early 20th century (brought to the U.S. in the 1960s)
Material: Wood
Type: Hand-carved palm-wine vessel / goblet
Design:
Features an uncommon relief carving of two figures harvesting rice, one tossing grains into a basket held by the other.
Both figures are depicted in motion, kicking up their heels in a celebratory posture.
The base is detailed with triangular reserves, a motif found in Kuba design but rare in this narrative form.
This piece is not only functional but a remarkable example of Kuba artistic expression, uncommon even among traditional African art. Thin-walled and delicately carved, it has survived intact—an increasingly rare feat for objects of this age and fragility.
Historically, such vessels were treasured by Bushoong nobles, who prized the most exquisitely carved pieces. Among daggers, boxes, and prestige items, cups like this were held in the highest regard.
📜 A unique and museum-worthy artifact, this goblet is a stunning example of traditional African craftsmanship with both cultural and artistic value.
📦 Ships with care. Serious inquiries and collectors welcome.
