Antique 1820 Jewish Circumcision Wimpel Torah Binder Hand Embroidery on Linen
An antique Jewish wimpel for the circumcision ceremony (or part of the wimpel), probably from Germany (from the estate of the German-Israeli Ayala Helga Deutsch-Landau) hand embroidery on a long linen fabric, dated in the embroidery as the year תק"פ - 1820, with a nice detailed embroidery of a Torah book, a wedding canopy and blessings for the newborn, all in Hebrew. The use of the wimpel - as a swaddling cloth for a baby boy, repurposed as a Torah binder, is documented among German-Jewish communities as early as the 16th century. Although the custom was also widespread among Jews in Switzerland, Alsace, Bohemia, Moravia, and Denmark. The first picture is of the part with the Torah book and canopy decorations, the three pictures after that shows the entire wimpel from side to side. The last picture is of the wimpel folded, will be sent that way.
Dimensions: 19X205 cm.
The wimpel is very worn, many holes and moth damages in the fabric, the wimpel is cut on all sides so it was probably framed or attached to something in the past, we are not sure if it has the entire original length it had when created, maybe parts were cut from the sides? The linen fabric is old and dry, got folding marks and a bit shedding, many small stains here and there.
