Roman Period CA. 100 BC - 100 AD (or earlier). A large 2" X 3" fragment of papyrus inscribed with demotic text in black ink. Some clear black lettering on one side and 5 or 6 lines of faded text on the other. Demotic was used specifically for writing detailed documents like accounting, literacy, and religious texts, and represents a movement from standardized hieroglyphics. Demotic was used famously as one of three writings on the Rosetta Stone. The Brooklyn Museum, 37.1803E. I purchased a Lot from an sale in London that had 4 fragments from the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s; previously in a 1970s UK collection.Comes enclosed in a 2 sided thick acrylic display case that allows for viewing both sides!
