Ancient Egyptian Akhenaten, also spelled in (Ancient Egyptian: Akhenaten and meaning \"effective of the Aten\"), was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. His rule was between 1353 - 1336 or 1351 - 1334 BC. The tenth ruler of the eighteenth dynasty. Before the fifth year of his reign, he was known as Amenhotep IV Ancient Egyptian : meaning Amon satisfied, and his name was Amenophis IV. As pharaoh, Akhenaten is famous for abandoning the traditional polytheism of Egypt and introducing the Athenian, or cult centered around the Aten. Opinions of Egyptologists differ as to whether religious politics was purely monotheistic, or whether it was monistic, syncretistic, or religious. This culture moved away from traditional religion after his death. Akhenaten\'s monuments were dismantled and hidden, his statues destroyed, and his name excluded from lists of rulers compiled by subsequent pharaohs. Traditional religious practice was gradually restored, particularly under his close successor Tutankhamun, who changed his name from Tutankhamen early in his reign. Decades later, rulers without clear succession rights from the Eighteenth Dynasty established a new dynasty, denigrating Akhenaten and his immediate successors and referring to Akhenaten as \"the enemy\" or \"that criminal\" in archival records.
