The sistrum (Egyptian seshem, Greek: sistron) is a rattle historically known from the cult music of Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. The sistrum has been found since 2600 BC. Cylinder seals from Sumer have been depicted as early as 500 BC. In Roman Egypt, sistrums were used by women in the worship of Isis.
The ancient Egyptian sistrum consists of a curved oval-shaped metal plate with a handle. The metal rods pass through the middle of the support and swing back and forth slightly in wide openings, producing a loud sound when danced. The handle is usually decorated with the head of Hathor, and rarely the goddess Bes.
