8 Original 19th Century hand-colored Plates from "The Habitable World Described":
These are eight 19th Century hand-colored plates from the "The Habitable World Described, or the Present State of the People in All Parts of the Globe, from North to South." They are the plates that originally describe the chapter on China. The British Museum has this in their collection (but not hand-colored). We have added links when available.
- "A Bear Chace [sic]". Oriental figures on horseback spearing a bear on the ground in a mountain setting. Print made by Burnet Reading after Julius Caesar Ibbetson. See Army On The March", Lines of soldiers with an officer in a horse-drawn carriage in the centre. Print made by James Fittler after Edward Francis Burney. See Chinese Villa";
- "The Foreigners Quarters at Canton". View of the 'hongs' in Guangzhou with flags of several nations flying from posts along the quayside; the Union flag is prominent; small boats in the river manned by Chinese.
- "Chinese Guards Presented to the Emperor". Soldiers to the right and the Imperial party seated at the left. Print made by Luigi Schiavonetti after Edward Francis Burney; Naval Engagement". Naval battle, with men on boats fighting men on the water on the left, two men on the water fighting on the right, mountains on the background with a temple to the left. Print made by John Thornthwaite after Julius Caesar Ibbetson. See prints are professionally framed and have not been reviewed outside of its original frame. The frame measures 12 by 10 inches. This rare find is in excellent condition with wear commensurate with age. As represented by the pictures.
