BHT Antioxidant commonly known as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Antioxidant.
Used in many applications to preserve oils and fats and also treat candle wax to help maintain color.
BHT is an effective antioxidant used to help preserve fats and oils and delay rancidity.
BHT can be, and is used in most oils although it is not as effective as in animal fats.
Often used to treat fats and oils for soapmaking to extend shelf life. Treat your liquid oils that have a shorter shelf life as soon as you receive and/or open them. For treating fats and oils to extend shelf life, carefully heat oil , or a portion of the oil you are wanting treated, to 160°F+ . Then carefully add the BHT and stir in to the oil(s) being treated. When the BHT is totally blended and well dissolved stir the already trated oil into the rest of your oils and stir well.
The treatment is always completed before adding the lye/water to the oils. The typical rate to treat using BHT is .01% - .1% w/w (by weight), .05% w/w is typically used for treating typical soapmaking oils.
For example to treat 5 pounds of fat or oils measure and use approximately .04 oz. or 1.135g of BHT, or about 1 tsp.
For additional effectiveness in soaps - combine with tetrasodium EDTA, as the EDTA ties up the metal ions and helps the BHT to work better, as sometimes, depending on the oils used, the BHT alone may yellow the soap.
BHT can be used to treat oils for use in cosmetics other than soap.
In candle wax use 0.1% (1/10 teaspoon per lb. of wax) as an antioxident.
BHT helps reduce color shift caused by oxygenation.
Melt point is approximately 154° F (68 C).
Many of the compounds that make up a candlewax are organic. Organic compounds tend to react with oxygen, which may cause the base color of the wax to change as the wax reacts with fragrances and dyes. When you pour and mix wax, you are introducing oxygen, which over time will cause the color of the finished candle to change . BHT binds with oxygen molecules trapped inside the candle so that other organic compounds do not. This reduces the effects of oxygenation and color shift in candles
