1990 Original Photo by ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER JOHN STEWART. Phoenix, a young bald eagle at the Springfield Zoo, is part of a program to educate the public about eagles. The Missouri Department of Conservation recently concluded a 10 year program to re-establish a breeding population of bald eagles in the state. The bald eagle is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico.
