AuschwitzI was first constructed to hold Polish political prisoners, who began to arrive in May1940. The first extermination of prisoners took place in September 1941, andAuschwitz II–Birkenau went on to become a major site of the Nazi Final Solution to the Jewish Question. From early 1942 until late 1944, transport trains delivered Jews to thecamp\'s gas chambers from all over German-occupied Europe, where they were killeden masse with the pesticide Zyklon B.An estimated 1.3 million people were sent to the camp, of whom at least1.1 million died. Around 90 percent of those killed were Jewish;approximately 1 in 6 Jews killed in the Holocaust diedat the camp.[1][2] Othersdeported to Auschwitz included 150,000 Poles, 23,000 Romani and Sinti, 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war, 400 Jehovah\'s Witnesses, and tens of thousands ofothers of diverse nationalities, including an unknown number of homosexuals.[3] Manyof those not killed in the gas chambers died of starvation, forced labor, infectious diseases, individual executions, andmedical experiments.
After1945 the name was applied to the displaced persons camp established nearby, but it is most commonly associated with the concentration camp. From 1941 to1945, almost 20,000 Soviet prisoners of war anda further 50,000 inmates died there.[3]Overcrowding,lack of food and poor sanitary conditions caused outbreaks of typhus, tuberculosis, typhoid fever and dysentery, leading to the deaths of more than 35,000 people in the first few months of1945, shortly before and after the liberation.
Thecamp was liberated on April 15, 1945, by the British 11th Armoured Division.[4] Thesoldiers discovered approximately 60,000 prisoners inside, most of themhalf-starved and seriously ill,[5] andanother 13,000 corpses lying around the camp unburied.[4] Thehorrors of the camp, documented on film and in pictures, made the name\"Belsen\" emblematic of Nazi crimes ingeneral for public opinion in many countries in the immediate post-1945 period.Today, there is a memorial with an exhibition hall at the site.
