Crystal - This team of researchers at the General Electric Research and Development Center has developed a new way to make crystals of ultra-pure germanium for detecting such high-energy radiation as X-rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays. The new \"radial gradient\" crystals are expected to measure radiation with greater accuracy and operate at 50 percent less voltage than detectors now available, thus paving the way for greatly improved detectors for nuclear medicine, laboratory and industrial applications. The high-purity germanium crystals -- the purest materials on Earth -- are worth three times their weight in gold. Dr. Robert N. Hall (right) and Theodore J. Soltys prepare to test one of the new radial gradient crystals in a cryogenic chamber at the GE Research and Development Center, Schenectady, New York. The crystals will be marketed by GE Space Division\'s Space Technology Products, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 11-30-1975. PHOTO FRONT
