This is an original press photo. Here is what the interior of the world's largest particle accelerator, the Atomic Energy Commission's 33 billion electron volt accelerator at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, Long Island, NY, looks like. The four-inch pipe shown leading to the lower right is used to introduce beams of protons into the accelerator's half-mile circular track where the beam is accelerated to nearly the speed of light and then is sent crashing into an atomic target. Careful studies of sub-atomic particles liberated by this collection help scientists to understand the nature of matter.Photo measures 9.25 x 7.5inches. Photo is dated 3-23-1966.

This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright.
