Biographical data from The New York Times -- Walter Sullivan - Science News Editor -- Walter Sullivan, science news editor of The New York Times, joined the staff of The Times as a copy boy in 1940 right after he was graduated from Yale University. During World War II he was skipper of a converted destroyer in the Pacific. He joined The Times in 1946, this time as a correspondent. That year his assignments took him to Alaska and then Antarctica, with Operation Highjump. In 1948 he toured the Pacific Islands to report what changes the aftermath of the war had brought. Reporting from China, he was one of the last outsiders to cross the Gobi Desert and visit Sinkiang before the Communist marched in. He covered at first hand the "cold war" conflict between Russia and the West in the struggle for Germany. In 1954 and again in 1956 he participated in Antarctic expeditions. In 1956 he was in charge of the special Times coverage of the International Geophysical Year. Photo measures 8 x 10.25inches. Photo is dated 04--1962.  PHOTO FRONT
