Here is the "Methane Pioneer" which set sail this week from Lake Charles , La., on an historic voyage to England. The ship, a converted 5,000 ton dry cargo ship, is carrying about 32,000 barrels of liquefied methane to gas deficient England, the first trans-ocean delivery of liquid methane in history. It carries the methane at atmospheric pressure and minus 258 degrees in special aluminum tanks installed in the hold of the ship. The maiden voyage climaxes five years of research and development by Constock International Methane Limited, which is owned by Union Stock Yard and Transit Company of Chicago, and Continental Oil Company, Houston, Texas. The unique ship is owned and operated by British Methane Limited, formed by Constock and the Gas Council of Great Britain. Twenty nine British seamen and seven British and American engineers are aboard. Until development of Constock's system, there has been no transportation of methane as a liquid without pressure. The chief constituent of natural gas, methane reduces one six hundredth in volume when liquefied.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches. Photo is dated 2-4-1959. PHOTO FRONT
