AutographQuote Signed, March 21, 1916, embossed Embassy of the U.S. Lthd, by ThomasNelson Page (1853–1922) Author (one of the best known of his day) and USAmbassador to Italy during WW1 (Woodrow Wilson Administration). In thisquote, written during WW1 (but before the U.S. entered the war) and while U.S.Ambassador to Italy, Page writes, in full: “This present time seems one todestroy all sentiment. But I feel that in America it will survive thoughit were destroyed in all the rest of the world. Thos. Nelson Page”

PAGE was born in Virginia, attended Washington and Lee College (when Robert E. Lee was President) and alsothe Univ. of Virginia law school. From 1876-93 he practiced law inRichmond, VA. He also began writing, and eventually gave up law toconcentrate fully on writing. He popularized the plantation traditiongenre of Southern writing, which told of an idealized version of life beforethe Civil War. Most of his writing was based on his personal experienceliving on a plantation in the Antebellum South and he vilified the reforms ofthe Gilded Age as a sign of moral decline. His 1887 collection of shortstories-- “In Ole Virginia” -- was his quintessential work. In 1894 hepublished another short-story collection called “The Burial of theGuns.” His writing was very popular and gained for him manyprominent admirers and friends, including fellow Virginian Woodrow Wilson, whoappointed Page U.S. ambassador to Italy, and referred to him as a “national;ornament.” He served as Ambassador from 1913-19, encompassing allof WW1, and writes this quote during the middle of the war, but before the U.S.entry into the war. He was a success as an Ambassador and managed toimprove U.S./ Italian relations during this difficult period. He resignedhis post in 1919 after disagreeing with President Wilson over the terms of theTreaty of Versailles, which gave Italy less benefits than Page believed theyentitled to. His 1920 book “Italy and the World War” is a memoir of hisservice there. He continued to write until his death in 1922.Historically, he was an activist to save historical sites, such as Yorktown, from loss to development. He was involved in gaining Federal funding tobuild a seawall at Jamestown in 1900 (which proved to be keen foresight as theremains of a fort were discovered there within the last 20 years— which wouldhave been permanently lost but for the seawall). In today’s politicalclimate, Page’s writing style would be considered a “Hate Crime.”
