Ann Pennington was born on December 23, 1893 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was an actress, known for Pretty Ladies (1925), Night Parade (1929) and Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929).
Stood stood only 4' 10" and wore a size 1 1/2 shoe.She was a red-haired, diminutive vaudevillian. She came to Broadway in 1911 as a chorine in a show starring Raymond Hitchcock. She achieved national fame as a dancing sprite in the Ziegfeld Follies. For several years she danced in George White's Scandals. Her signature dance was a variation of the 'black bottom', but she was just as adept at tap dancing or doing the Charleston. She is credited with introducing the Black Bottom, which was an African-American dance, to a wider audience with her partner, eccentric dancer Tom Patricola.On screen, usually performed scantily clad specialty numbers.She amassed a fortune of $2 million, but lost most of it during the Great Depression and the remainder on gambling and hotel bills. During the last few years of her life, she lived on welfare at various hotels near 42nd Street and in Times Square.
