Copal is the name given to petrified tree sap that is less than 40 million years old. In the case of these specimens from Madagascar they are estimated to between 500,000 to 1.2 million years old. Tree sap oozes from the tree, bugs who are delinquent in their navigation skills land or walk in the sap and get stuck. A million years later they are a very interesting artifact from the near geologic past.
