Item#3071 What you see pictured is part of a large calcite crystal (Junnar, India)that was broken into pieces. Calcite has the ability to break intovarious size pieces that are all similar in shape with 120 degree angles,called cleavage. Most pieces are smallor irregular with stepped shapes and pieces missing. Just a few piecesform these perfectly shaped specimens that are beautiful to look at,water-clear, and form rainbows, depending upon how the specimen is held to alight source.
Calcite alsohas the property of double refraction, which means it bends light and splits it up into twoimages. During World War II, optical calcite was used in airplane bombsights to help target areas on the ground. You can find more informationabout optical calcite's used during the war through Google.
This calcite is 100% see-through clear on 5 faces(1 face is only 50% clear) and 100% read through clear. This specimen has mostly perfect cleavage with 1 chipped corner. These 2 corners while not perfect have the same angles as the larger surfaces. You will find it is fun to play with! You can see some tiny cleavage planes on some of the surfaces, but you will not notice them when look through the specimen You can read through any side of this specimen, even end to end. The calcite measures 1 1/4 X 1 3/8 X 1 1/8 inches. The calcite weighs 2.80 ounces (79 grams).I always refund any extra shipping, no matter how many items you order.Related Items:
