I'm inclined to agree with you that 228 years was a good run. But lets pin the tail on the correct donkey (asses): The voting public.
They are, as one should expect in a representative democracy ... electing those that best represent them. And unfortunately that is kleptocrats, sound bytes, and based on a complete ignorance of history and her lessons.
